Beyond chick lit
You know how the door of the bedroom closes when a couple gets together in most romantic novels? They’re kissing, and then…you see them later, holding hands. Well, there’s a whole class of novels for women that really gets into the details. Definitely a guilty pleasure, you wouldn’t leave them hanging around for the kids to read. You wouldn’t even want them reading the back cover! The category is called erotic romance and many women enjoy them as a source of, let’s say, romantic inspiration. Who knew? Of course, as in all romance, the women are attractive and the men are wealthy and there’s something keeping them apart that they will overcome. But when they do get together, oh boy! The sparks fly! The best ones have page-turning plots, great characters, and a good sense of humor. In Private Games by Tawny Taylor (yeah, that’s her name), the contemporary men and women are strong and successful and the action is hot, hot, hot, with bondage, lust, and descriptive passages way beyond your average chick lit. Centered around a board game, this novel features three women who toss the dice and win big in the romance department. Love stories in a historical context are popular, and there are eighteen spicy couples from around the globe in Guilty Pleasures by Maria Isabel Pita. Then there are the women who want to give it up to the hot aliens or vampires, well represented in the novel Dead Sexy by Kim Corum. If you think these books are a bunch of nonsense and you can’t imagine why anyone would read them, you’re right. And if you take responsibility for your own fantasy life and you could use erotic romance as a tool, then you’re right too!
